World Spay Day 2014

Pierre: I need to talk to you about something serious. That’s why I’m wearing my serious face.

Pierre_Chills_on_floor_sm

There are too many pets. I don’t just mean in this house, either, though I would be pretty happy if I didn’t have to share my treats with Newton. I mean in the whole world.

Pet overpopulation is a big problem. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) says that about 2.7 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs die in animal shelters every year. That’s one every 11 seconds! Spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters from adding to the pet overpopulation. Just look at these numbers:

Cat Reproduction Pyramid

Today is the 20th annual World Spay Day. Partners around the country and around the world are making low and no-cost spay/neuter clinics available in honor of the event. This year’s goal is 60,000 pets spayed and neutered through World Spay Day Events.

If you’re reading this blog, you probably don’t need me to tell you that spaying is neutering is lifesaving and important. But you may know someone who has pets who they can’t afford to spay or neuter. This is their chance! Visit the World Spay Day site and search for a nearby event in the US or internationally.

I’m neutered, and I’m a cool cat. Help everyone join the club. We can make a difference one spay or neuter at a time.

A Tunnel Tail

Pierre: There was some operator error with our tunnel.

Pierre_and_tritunnel_from_above_sm

Pierre: Newton, are you stuck in the tunnel?

Newton: I’m not stuck. I’m resting.

Pierre_watches_Newt_crush_tunnel_sm

Pierre: You look pretty stuck to me. Here, I can help you get out.

Peirre_helps_Newton_with_Tunnel

Newton: I wasn’t stuck! Pushy older brothers, always thinking they know what’s right for you. I liked it in there!

Pierre_and_Newton_tritunnel

Pierre: Well. He didn’t have to take that so personally.

Up Periscope!

Newton: Check it out, Pierre! I’m raising my periscope.

PierreNewtonTriTunnelPeriscope02_sm

Pierre: I don’t think that’s a periscope. It’s a tunnel.

Newton: But you can see things out of a periscope, right?

Pierre: I guess so.

Newton: I see you. So it’s a periscope.

Pierre. *sigh*

PierreNewtonTriTunnel01_sm

Newton: The head peep is going to the beach today to meet a bunch of the other cat bloggers. We’re sure they are going to have lots of fun. But if they happen to see a strange periscope… don’t pay it any attention at all.

Tasty Thursday: Wysong Dream Treats

Our friends at Chewy.com offered us the opportunity to review Dream Treats from Wysong, and we never say no to trying treats!

Ashton_Inspects_Wysong_Treats_sm

These treats have no starches, and are made from 95% raw quail meat using their proprietary no-heat manufacturing process. We aren’t sure how you can make something like this without heat, but we like the idea of them being species-appropriate.

We were surprised to see how large they were when we opened them. These are for dogs, cats, or ferrets, so they must have decided to go with dog size. When we looked down into the bag, they were big disks instead of regular cat-sized treats. (What, you don’t gaze down into your cat treat bags?)

Wysong_Dream_treats_size

Well, let’s just get a better look at one of these disks.

Ashton: Mine!

Pierre: How rude.

Ashton_steals_whole_dream_treat_sm

This might be the point at which the review went off the rails a little bit. Ashton growled and made off with her stolen treat, with Pierre and Newton in anxious pursuit.

Ashton: Mine!

Ashton_with_stolen_wysong_treat_sm

Some of the oversized freeze-dried treats we have tried in the past would have been choking hazards at this size, but the Wysong treat disks break fairly easy. Ashton managed to snap hers roughly in half and leave some behind as a decoy.

Pierre: *sighs* I don’t understand why her poor manners get rewarded like this. I was good, and I’m getting leftovers.

Pierre_with_half_of_stolen_treat

Ashton: Mine!

Ashton_with_half_stolen_treat

Newton: Hey, Ashton! Whatcha got? Pierre had some. Can I have some, too?

Ashton: Mine!

Ashton_and_Newton_Stolen_treat

The disks are easy to crumble into more reasonable cat bite-sized pieces.

Newton: It’s about time!

Ashton: Hey, that’s–

Newton: Yeah, we know, Ash. Mine!

Newton_finally_gets_a_treat

As you can see, these were a huge hit. All three cats loved them, especially Ashton. The only drawback to them is that they aren’t bite-sized, and they crumble into a bit of a powdery mess when you break them up. This isn’t a deal-breaker, but they aren’t the kind of thing you can keep on hand in a canister for immediate sharing. But other than that, they’re great, tasty treats, and we give them six paws up!

FTC Disclosure: We received these treats for free from Chewy.com, but our opinions are our own.
