Pierre: I need to talk to you about something serious. That’s why I’m wearing my serious face.
There are too many pets. I don’t just mean in this house, either, though I would be pretty happy if I didn’t have to share my treats with Newton. I mean in the whole world.
Pet overpopulation is a big problem. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) says that about 2.7 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs die in animal shelters every year. That’s one every 11 seconds! Spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters from adding to the pet overpopulation. Just look at these numbers:
Today is the 20th annual World Spay Day. Partners around the country and around the world are making low and no-cost spay/neuter clinics available in honor of the event. This year’s goal is 60,000 pets spayed and neutered through World Spay Day Events.
If you’re reading this blog, you probably don’t need me to tell you that spaying is neutering is lifesaving and important. But you may know someone who has pets who they can’t afford to spay or neuter. This is their chance! Visit the World Spay Day site and search for a nearby event in the US or internationally.
I’m neutered, and I’m a cool cat. Help everyone join the club. We can make a difference one spay or neuter at a time.

All of us are neutered, as are those stray cats that Mommy managed to TNR. Mommy checked and was sad to note that there are no participation in the World Spay Day locally (BTW, the link for the “Internationally” is missing a “h” in the link address). Mommy does get a “special rate” from the vet for the neutering of stray cats she traps, but it is still quite expensive.

Thanks for letting us know about the link. We fixed it. Good help is so hard to find!

This is a very important message to get out to people. Thanks.

We were neutered before we came to our furever home – most of the cat rescues here do this.

We’ve had some wonderful improvements with our city shelter, and part of that is offering low-cost spay and neuter options for anybody who can’t pay. This has helped here, but unfortunately there are always more folks to reach.

This is my favorite message to get out but unfortunately it is hard to get people to actually get their animals spayed or neutered. I did the kittens that moved in next door and they really didn’t want me to do it. Some people just think it is cruel to do just because they don’t have the facts and most people don’t see all the cats in the shelters from animals not getting spayed or neutered. Great post.

We wish that there was more spay/neutering going on. WE know that amongst our own CB there is great support because we all know the other side of not doing this and it’s hard to find good homes for an overabundant population. Thank you for putting the word out. Every message is important.

Spraying is so important! The statistics are scary. We can’t figure out why there are still people out there who won’t do it! Is it because they want to raise kittens? If so, they should foster. Sheesh.

The Swiss Cats says
Some countries seem not to belong to the world as we didn’t know about this special day before, and as we sadly noticed that there was no registrated event in Switzerland (we checked the World Spay Day site). We already know that we are going to spread the word in our area for next year ! Purrs
