Meowbox Review and Discount Code

Monthly subscription boxes have been popular for a while. Beauty products, snacks, even treats for dogs. So it’s only fair that there’s a subscription box just for cats, too, right?

Meowbox arrives in mailboxWhen the Meowbox people reached out to us to ask how if we would like to review their monthly cat subscription box, it sounded like a great chance to check out something new.  The idea of having a box full of goodies just for us show up was irresistible.

The experience was different from the start, with an email that arrived to let us know that our Meowbox had shipped. There was even a tracking number that allowed us to check on where the box was every day until it arrived in our mailbox.

The email with a tracking number also had a second, more special, tracking number. Meowbox gives back to shelter cats. For every Meowbox, they give a can of food to a shelter cat, and you can use a tracking code to see whee the status of the can deonated on behalf of your Meowbox.

One Box Can trackingMeowbox calls this One Box Can, but we just call it heartwarming.

Newton: Enough talk. Cn we open the Meowbox now? I don’t have thumbs, so I can’t do this myself.

Newton: Our box came personalized just for us! The Meowbox humans do this for every box, and it made me feel extra-special. They even drew a heart for us. I love you, too!

I really like the packaging, and I can’t wait to destroy that tissue paper and the feather so lovingly attached to it with a sticker. Can we get past the postcard that lists the good stuff inside and actually see the good stuff now?

Pierre: I get to make the first choice from the Meowbox because I’m the oldest.

Newton: You’re old all right!

Pierre: I’m not THAT old. And I know catnip when I smell it. This irresistible catnip mouse is my favorite. Check out the suede tail on it!

Newton: Well, while you play with that mouse, I’m taking this one.

Newton: This is a Fatty Mouse. Not only does it crinkle, but it’s full of catnip, and it has filling made of recycled water bottles. I think that the crinkly sound inside is made by little water bottles moving around in there.

Pierre: There aren’t just mice. There’s also a wooly caterpillar. There’s something irresistible about this. Maybe it’s the smell of the wool or something.

Newton: It’s not all toys and games. Then there are the grain-free jerky treats. You know what? If you sneak up on your human while she is trying to open them, she makes a loud, startled noise and jerky treats fly all over the floor.

Ashton: Way to go, Newton! We’ll have these cleaned up from the floor in no time.

Newton: The Meowbox people said that if we were picky or were on special diets, we could have ordered a special no-food version of the Meowbox for delivery instead and gotten all toys instead of having treats.

Ashton: Don’t you dare tell them not to send us treats!

Newton: The final item in the Meowbox is pet grass that you can grow yourself. This looks so easy to do that even the head peep could probably grow it, and she kills plants just by looking at them. I can’t wait to have fresh greens to graze on!

The Meowbox is a real hit, stuffed with fun things that we really loved. We give it twelve enthusiastic paws up!

A Special Drawing

Another Monday, another weekend went by where we helped make the bed.

But this time is special, because a special friend of ours took a pen and sketched the photo of Pierre on the unmade bed.

Pierre drawing by Thomas Clausen

This wonderful sketch was drawn by Thomas Clausen, who just spent the past year sketching at least a photo a day to work on his drawing skills. Talk about dedication! He has recently started taking commissions for art, and we’re pretty excited to watch his work continue to blossom as we can glimpse it on his new web site.

Thank you for the wonderful sketch of Pierre, Thomas. We can’t wait to see what you create next!

Decorating for Halloween

Newton: I love Halloween! It’s my favorite holiday because I’m orange, and orange is extra-fashionable for the holiday. So now that it’s October, I’m decorating for the holiday. This is my haunted house.

Did I hear you ask what it’s haunted by? Well, by a huge, fluffy, orange tail, of course.

The Halloween ornament is in place over the door. Perfect. I can’t wait for Ashton to come by and want to see my haunted house. She’s such a scaredy cat. Let the party begin!

Are you going to decorate for Halloween this weekend, kitties?

Your Cat is a Carnivore, not a Vegetarian

Happy World Vegetarian Day! Many humans make diet choices for ethical or health reasons to become vegetarian, and some of them wonder whether their cats can join them in their dietary changes. The short answer is no, it isn’t safe for your cat to eat a vegetarian diet.

Cats are obligate carnivores. Their physiology requires that they eat meat, and cats who don’t eat meat risk serious health issues.

One of the clearest examples of why cats need a meat-based diet is that they require taurine. Taurine is an amino acid that is found in small quantities in muscle meats and in larger amounts in the heart and liver. The nerves in a cat’s eye that see images are rich in taurine, and they degrade when a cat is taurine-deficient, leading to a loss of sight. Long-term taurine deficiency can even lead to blindness.

The heart of a cat with taurine deficiency can grow enlarged and weakened, a condition known as dilated cardiomyarpathy (DCM). After Dr. Paul Pion discovered of the danger of taurine deficiency to feline heart health in 1987, commercial cat food manufacturers began supplementing the taurine in cat food to make up for taurine destroyed during the cooking process.

Cats also have a short digestive tract compared to humans. In humans, food takes 30 hours to five days to pass through the intestine, compared to 12-24 hours in cats. Herbivores, like rabbits, have intestines much longer in comparison to their body size because the process of digesting the cellulose is long and difficult. Cats intestines aren’t meant for extracting nutrients from plant matter the way they are from meats.

A cat’s absolute requirement for a meat-based protein diet and a digestive tract too short to extract nutrients from plants are things that make your kitty a carnivore rather than an herbivore. Your cat can’t safely join you in your vegetarian diet, so celebrate the differences that make your kitty unique and different from you, including your different diets!
