The Cat Days of Summer

You may have heard about the so-called dog days of summer. Merrriam-Webster defines the dog days as:

  1. the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere
  2. a period of stagnation or inactivity

There aren’t any dogs around here, so we sure have cat days. They look like this.

When it comes to inactivity, that’s what we cats do best.

Newton: I’ll be with you in a few minutes. Or a few hours. Or maybe in autumn.

How are you spending the cat days of summer?

Take Time to Smell the Flowers

Newton: Flowers? For me? You shouldn’t have!

Orange tabby cat sniffs flowers

Newton: * SNIFF * How lovely!

Pierre: Oh, hey, Newt, what do you have there?

Newt: What does it look like?

Pierre: It looks like flowers. Who sent you flowers?

Newton: Probably a secret admirer. There’s no card.

Pierre: No card? Then how do you know the flowers are for you? Maybe they’re for me.

Newton: Because I found them first. My secret admirer is shy.

Pierre: Fine, you can have them. They don’t smell like they will taste good, anyhow.

Newton: Ha, they’re all mine now!

Newton: I really wish I knew who sent you, little flowers. Too bad you can’t talk. If you could you would…. OOPS!

orange tabby cat knocks over flowers

Newton: My poor flowers! This is sad. But no one saw this happen, so we can blame it on Pierre. The important part is that I get to keep the secret admirer.

Lazy Day

It’s National Lazy Day. We know you are busy cats and may not be able to think of what to do on a day dedicated to taking a break, so we have five suggestions:

1. Stay in Bed

Why be in a hurry to get out of bed if you’re being lazy? It’s the most comfortable spot in the house, so take a load off and lounge around a bit.

2. Binge Watch TV

A long stretch of time with nothing to do with it? Grab your remote control and binge watch! Just remember that if you let the humans take the remote, you’ll end up watching courtroom dramas or police procedural, so hang on tight to it so you can watch nature shows instead.

3. Skip Your Exercise Workout

Your training for the kitchen-to-bedroom triathlon will wait today. Being lazy means you can put your exercise routine aside today and relax.

4. Read a Good Book

Haven’t you missed having time to lose yourself in a good book? Today is the perfect day for it! If you need a suggestion about a cat book, we have some favorites.

5. Take a Nap

What else would a cat do on a lazy day but take a nap? It’s what we do best!

Deer TV

Newton: Whoa, check out what’s on the cat TV today!

orange tabby cat looks out window

Deer! That one seems to appreciate the grass left by that noisy machine that cut it down yesterday.

Where there’s one, there are always more. Deer hang out in gangs, doing their deer things.

Like eating grass. Ugh. Can you believe they seem to like that stuff?
