The Cat Days of Summer

You may have heard about the so-called dog days of summer. Merrriam-Webster defines the dog days as:

  1. the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere
  2. a period of stagnation or inactivity

There aren’t any dogs around here, so we sure have cat days. They look like this.

one-eyed brown tabby cat sprawls on sofa

When it comes to inactivity, that’s what we cats do best.

gray tabby cat snoozes on sofa

Newton: I’ll be with you in a few minutes. Or a few hours. Or maybe in autumn.

Sleepy orange tabby cat with splayed paw

How are you spending the cat days of summer?

We are spending our dog/cat days of summer the same way you are. Since we are a multi-pet household, we are all in this together.

I wish Soth would embrace that kind of cat day of summer! He’s that way in the winter, but in the summer all he wants is to go out and eat grass in the yard–I had to break down and buy him a little tent!

Pleased to meet you all. Love your photos, they epitomize what we do best. We are having some wonderful ‘cat days’ too. We agree, a state of inertia is the best position to find oneself in, well if you’re a cat. The humans still have to go to work and earn our food and supplies. Yay! It’s great to be a cat. Head boops to you all ๐Ÿ™‚

TBT: Sorry, but we have a correction here. “The Dog Days” are named after Sirius, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (the large dog), first came up over the horizon before the sun. These were the hottest days of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. That is basically from mid-July to late August.

Cettainly dogs to lay around panting in the heat. But so do most other animals. It is a gret example of how cultural references slowly change over time to reflect what people are familiar with.

Few people these days notice when Sirius appears at dawn, but the “dog” meme persists and new explanations for the original phrase are created. ๐Ÿ˜‰
