Safety First: Paper Bags

On our post a couple days ago, Caren from Cat Chat with Caren and Cody reminded us to cut the handles off of our paper shopping bags before playing in them. It was a great reminder, especially since we posted another photo yesterday of Newton going into a paper bag which also has handles.

That’s actually not how we normally get paper bags at all, but we were supervised the brief time we were allowed into those bags to have our photos taken. If we have paper bags left out to play in, the handles are always removed first.

It’s not so unusual a danger for a cat to get a head caught in the handle of a paper bag. We remember it happening to Star from the Celestial Kitties earlier this year, and to one of the foster kittens at Riverfront Cats last year. Have there been more blog entries about this that we forgot? Probably so. Catnip does that to the long-term memory.

And once upon a time, we had a shopping bag incident, too. The head peep woke up to find one of the cats who came before, Louie, in bed with a big paper bag attached to him. He had gotten his head stuck in a handle and dragged it all the way across the house in the darkness in search of help!

So please, if you’re going to let kitties play in paper bags, cut the handles off. We’re going to leave the bag in such rough condition that you aren’t going to want to go shopping with it afterwards anyhow!

Bagging It

Newton: Everybody said that Pierre was cute in that bag in yesterday’s post. I can’t allow anybody to out-cute me, so I found a bag of my own.

Am I doing it right?

Recovering from the Holidaze

We hope that all of you who were celebrating had a great holiday yesterday. We didn’t get to celebrate until evening, but it was worth the wait!

Newton: I — I mean we — got a stuffed cricket that makes exciting cricket noises whenever you move it. Or bite it. Or shake it. Or BITE it.

Newton and the Cricket Toy

I heard the rumor that this was going to be a daytime toy only because it makes noise, so I’m planning to hide it under the sofa. Don’t tell anybody, all right? How else are we going to show our appreciation for the gift at three in the morning?

Pierre: This gift bag is full of the best gift of all… me!

We heard that the indoor tree is going away tomorrow, so we are going to enjoy that tonight, too. We hope all of you find ways to make holiday mischief, as well. After all, there’s no one saying you can’t be naughty any more. Time to live it up, right?

Merry Catmas!

Ashton: Whoa, it’s a holiday. Changes in routine scare me. I heard that a lot of you were celebrating, too, and we really hope that you’re having a great holiday.

Pierre: Oh, Newton. We already have the best gift of all, and it can’t fit in a box or be wrapped in a package. We have friends around the world who visit us and share our adventures. We are grateful to you each and every day for the gift of your friendship.

Merry Christmas to all of you and your families who are celebrating today from all of us in our family.
