Kicking the Kibble Habit

Ashton: Hi, My name is Ashton, and I’m a kibble addict.

Ashton

Pierre and Newton: Hi, Ashton!

Pierre and Newton on cat tree

Ashton: It has been eight months since I first started to give up The Kibble. It was really, really hard.

Newton: Why was it so hard?

Ashton: Kibble tastes good! And I love how it crunches, too. But I was a little… Rubenesque.

Ashton was Rubenesque in Nov 2013

Newton: *whispers* What does Rubenesque mean?

Pierre: *whispers* It means fat.

Ashton: DON’T CALL ME FAT!

Newton: But you aren’t fat, Ashton. You used to be fat, but you aren’t any more, I mean. Look what a difference eight months on canned food has made. If you weren’t my furbling, I would think you were a babe.

Ashton: Thank you, Newton. That’s very sweet of you.

Ashton Sits on End of Shelf

Pierre: You know, not only does our canned food diet help us to maintain better weight, it also helps with our hydration. You two are too young to remember all of the cats who came before who all suffered chronic kidney disease: Cyrano, Rhett, Louie, and Talia. One after another after another. Kibble is about 10% moisture, so it keeps us chronically dehydrated, while canned food is more like 78% moisture. Hopefully, we won’t all have to go through the same kidney problems that the cats who came before did, too.

Ashton: We don’t want to be sick like that. Occasional hairballs are bad enough.

Newton: No, not if it means going to the vet. I don’t like that at all, even when it’s just to get my armpits manscaped.

Ashton: Well if you weren’t such a barbarian and actually groomed yourself properly, that wouldn’t be an issue.

Newton: I’m not a barbarian!

Pierre: Settle down, you two. I had one more thing to tell you.

Pierre

Ashton: What’s that?

Pierre: I overheard the head peep saying that she eventually hopes to have us on a raw diet because it’s species-appropriate.

Newton: Does that mean she’s going to bring a bird into the house and turn it loose so we can hunt it like we were in the wild? That would be pawesome!

Ashton thinks about the huge bird outside the window

Ashton: I don’t know about that… I might stick with my cans after all.ย

My human only feeds us canned food for our meals, and I have to say we are so much better off for it. The texture of Boodie’s fur even improved and she does not mat anywhere near what she used to!

Luckily my cats have never been huge kibble fans, they’ve all much preferred canned food. Truffles has a couple brands of grain-free kibble that she likes but I only feed it as a treat ๐Ÿ™‚

The mom has read several articles claiming dry cat food is sprayed with chemicals to make it taste really good and “addicting”. We feel for you Ashton, Oui Oui is the same way and will only eat 2 favors of wet food, both of which aren’t the best for her either.

BTW, Pierre looked very handsome yesterday on his calendar page.

The mom has tried really hard to get us off the kibble. But we won’t give it up. ‘Cept for Zoey…she’s been off the kibble wagon for some time now and only gets the occasional treat. But me and Ernie have held strong. But we don’t eat just kibble. We eat a combo of grain-free canned, freeze-dried raw and kibble. And sometimes the mom adds a splash of water to our kibble just to make sure we’re getting enough moisture. This has been working out okay for us…though the mom would love to cut out the kibble totally. We wish her luck…nah, no we don’t.

Ashton, you’re looking pawsome now! (Want us to sneak you some kibble?? ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Ohhhhhh. We would LOVE to see a bird let loose in your house…the one Ashton is thinking of. MOL.

Your post (with photo evidence!) inspired Mommy to put ALL of us on canned, at least for one meal to see how it goes. So we’ll get kibbles for breakfast and canned for dinner. Everyone except Tutu ate the canned but Mommy says Tutu can go straight to Raw (she likes raw). She thinks the problem ones (to get to Raw) would be Cosmo and Coco, and possibly Meow-Me and Ling (she’s a little picky with food). But we’ll see how it goes.

Good work, Ashton! We hope your transition to raw will go smoothly. ๐Ÿ™‚

Concatulations on your weight loss, and for stopping your kibble habits ! We still eat kibbles, but we mainly eat natural and balanced canned food with high percentage of meat for which mom is an adviser. Purrs

It is so hard to wean some cats off the kibble and some love the canned food. I guess it all depends on what they were raised on when they were kittens. Good info on the foods.

Ashton, I too am a kibble addict! But since I cant get them myself, an TBT only gives them out as treats, I am (involuntarily) unner control. Its canned food all the rest of the time. ~ Marley

You are looking very elegant since you gave up the kibble Ashton. I only have a tiny amount of kibble now and again as a treat but I prefer wet food. Mum tried to get me and Eric on raw food but neither of us would eat it. I do like a raw mouse now and again though.

Cousin Trooper’s new Mom has weaned him off kibble and he only gets wet food. We get both but Mom also adds extra water to our wet.

Hi Ashton. At the shelter, I only got kibble. I love kibble. TW started only giving me 10 pieces of kibble a day and I lost a pound. The vet was concerned but it was because of the lack of kibble. If itโ€™s there, Iโ€™ll eat it before the wet food. Iโ€™m doing a food review next week and TW overfilled my kibble dish. I had it eaten by the next day. Heh heh. I still like my kibble.

Wow it is amazing to see how much weight you have lost! Mom wasn’t aware that kibble was bad for you. She said she is going to go research it tomorrow and see what she can do since Ralphie has never liked canned or raw and I am very picky about what canned I will eat and I will only eat raw sometimes. Now she is very worried.

Don’t tell my crew, but after the two oldest (and STUBBORNEST) hold-outs pass they are all going to solely canned foods, too. I just can’t put the Seniors through it though…Kona holds on by a thread as it is, and Grayce needs every calorie she can get…junk or not.

Good work, Ashton! The boyz here think you are a TOTALLY HOTTY HOT HOT HOTTIE.

Oh Ashton, we are so proud of you, good going! We know how addictive kibble is and Neytiri is such a kibble head, she won’t eat canned food. (But we would not be chasing down any of the birds that live by you for a raw food source, they are too scary!)
