Cupcake Gets Around

Cupcake got around a lot on Saturday! Of course, she made a stop at the coffee shop to see her friends there.

She wasn’t expecting to see something else. Cupcake tiptoed around a column to get a better view.

Do you see the dog, too? The dog’s human kept him a respectful distance away while the other human went inside to get their coffee.

Cupcake also visited the vet. But it wasn’t the scary kind of visit. Our scale broke last week, and Cupcake needed a weigh-in before she could get her flea medicine. She is over 4 1/2 lbs already!

While she was there, she jumped down onto the floor to look around the exam room. Since it was early in the morning and this wasn’t an actual exam visit, the doors to the exam room were open, and Josie, the resident cat at our vet’s office, strolled in. Josie saw Cupcake a moment before Cupcake saw her.

After a moment, Josie lifted a paw and waved it at Cupcake to be sure the kitten knew she wasn’t allowed to stick around. That was OK, because Cupcake had other plans. She had shopping to do!

We visited her friends at the pet store, and Cupcake decided she wanted to ride in the cart on top of her Sleepypod instead of walking.

Cupcake, you’re facing the wrong way!

Cupcake: Who are you calling the wrong way?

Finally, Cupcake got to spend some quality time in the yard. We finally had some dry days, so she was able to lay down on the grass in the shade. What else could a girl want on a summer’s day?

Ice, Ice Baby

Cupcake: What is that in my water?

Cupcake: The humans said it’s hot weather, so they were going to put something special in my water. Now something is swimming around in there!

Cupcake: Every time I put in my paw, it gets wet, so I can’t seem to catch the little things in the water.

Cupcake: And they’re shrinking fast. Are they drowning? I can’t save them!

Cupcake: They’re gone!

In this hot weather, we periodically add some ice to the cat fountain to cool the water off. Cupcake is fascinated by it, and she comes running as soon as she hears the sound of the ice splash into the water. She still hasn’t figured out why it vanishes so quickly.

Visiting Fancy Cats at the Cat Show

I stopped by the Sandy Claws TICA cat show last weekend. My timing wasn’t very good, and I was there around lunchtime, which meant there was less happening as some of the show rings were on lunch breaks.

The two rings that were being judged were both longhairs. One ring was all kittens in various longhair varieties. This beautiful, white kitten was patient with the judge who seemed to be giving her an internal organ exam during her turn to be judged.

The second ring being judged was all Maine Coons. This kitty was very active while being judged. I didn’t really understand why there were cat rubber ducks on the judge’s table, but maybe that was just her thing. This show cat was much omre interested in the scratching post than the ducks.

Speaking of Maine Coons, they seemed to be really over represented. I didn’t take a cat census, but I’m pretty sure they were the most popular cat at the show. This big guy was resting in his cage when I passed.

Since it was lunchtime, I didn’t have anyone to ask about most of the cats I saw. I think this beautiful kitty is a silver shaded American Shorthair.

This clown is an Oriental Shorthair. His human had traveled with him all the way from Las Vegas to Orlando for the show. As you can see, this kitty is a real clown. He wasn’t struggling to get down, but he actually rolled over when he heard the camera lens clicking.

Some of the kittens at the show were absolutely irresistible. This ragdoll kitten has the cutest face!

This Persian kitten was also for sale, and a potential buyer was looking closely at him.

There were a remarkable number of Sphynx kitties on hand. While other breeds like Abyssinians and Somalis were barely represented, there were quite a few Sphinx. Maybe that has something to do with the breeders and preferences of people in our part of the country.

Not all of the cats at the show were fancy. It was surprising how many cats were on hand to compete in the household pet category. I always thought that would be a very small group, but there were a good number of the cats there, maybe 10%, who were competing as household cats.

I had a lot of questions about that category, especially, but as I mentioned before, it was lunchtime, so the humans were rather distracted and most weren’t very chatty.

Because it was lunchtime, a lot of the humans were away from their cats entirely. This meant I was left looking at cats in closed cages or show shelters, which are hard to take photos through, especially when the shelters have plastic covers. I did find it funny that a lot of the cages and shelters were decorated, usually to match the cattery name. People who take the time to attend shows often go the extra mile to make their little corner of the show floor look special, too!

I overheard a vendor saying that the show was going to be in the same location next year, but a month earlier. I will be looking forward to seeing the cats next year, and I’ll be sure not to schedule my time to visit them during lunch hour next time so I can learn a lot more about each of the cats I see.

Cupcake Takes Poop Island

Up until now, Cupcake has gone on adventures around town, but she hasn’t seen much of the area near home. Last weekend, she got to check out the front yard.

Since this was the hottest week so far this year, her adventure happened early in the morning. The grass was still soaked with dew. She did a lot of foot-flicking to try to dry her feet and asked to go somewhere a little more dry.

Somewhere more dry ended up a nearby small median island with trees we call Poop Island because neighbors walk their dogs there and aren’t always careful about picking up after them. Cupcake thought it was a cool place despite the funny name.

She was especially excited about the trees. Unlike the little palm trees at her favorite Starbucks planter, these are oaks, and they are much larger around.

Her first try climbing the tree failed, and she slid right back down. But she stood there and thought about it a minute more.

Cupcake tried climbing again, and the second time, she went right up, just like a squirrel. She was probably disappointed she wasn’t allowed to climb as high as the squirrels.

Cupcake didn’t think it was fair she wasn’t allowed to climb farther than the length of her leash. At least she could chase bugs around the grass and base of the tree. That was a lot of fun!

One of the neighbors happened by and was amazed to see Cupcake outside with a harness. The neighbor’s daughter has been asking to take their cat outside with a harness, and our neighbor thought it wasn’t possible. Cupcake was happy to demonstrate that it possible, if your cat has the right temperament.

At the end of our conversation with the neighbor, Cupcake got very squirmy and started complaining. I took her inside, and she headed straight to the litter box. She hasn’t figured out that all that grass is good for taking care of business, even on Poop Island!

The adventure closer to home was a success, and we will have to get out in the neighborhood more often.
