Cupcake Takes Poop Island

Up until now, Cupcake has gone on adventures around town, but she hasn’t seen much of the area near home. Last weekend, she got to check out the front yard.

Since this was the hottest week so far this year, her adventure happened early in the morning. The grass was still soaked with dew. She did a lot of foot-flicking to try to dry her feet and asked to go somewhere a little more dry.

Somewhere more dry ended up a nearby small median island with trees we call Poop Island because neighbors walk their dogs there and aren’t always careful about picking up after them. Cupcake thought it was a cool place despite the funny name.

She was especially excited about the trees. Unlike the little palm trees at her favorite Starbucks planter, these are oaks, and they are much larger around.

Her first try climbing the tree failed, and she slid right back down. But she stood there and thought about it a minute more.

Cupcake tried climbing again, and the second time, she went right up, just like a squirrel. She was probably disappointed she wasn’t allowed to climb as high as the squirrels.

Cupcake didn’t think it was fair she wasn’t allowed to climb farther than the length of her leash. At least she could chase bugs around the grass and base of the tree. That was a lot of fun!

One of the neighbors happened by and was amazed to see Cupcake outside with a harness. The neighbor’s daughter has been asking to take their cat outside with a harness, and our neighbor thought it wasn’t possible. Cupcake was happy to demonstrate that it possible, if your cat has the right temperament.

At the end of our conversation with the neighbor, Cupcake got very squirmy and started complaining. I took her inside, and she headed straight to the litter box. She hasn’t figured out that all that grass is good for taking care of business, even on Poop Island!

The adventure closer to home was a success, and we will have to get out in the neighborhood more often.

That’s funny that Cupcake didn’t want to go to the bathroom outside. That was one of the first things I did on my first big outside adventure, to the L.A. Feline Film Festival in September 2014! My human wasn’t prepared, so she was quite embarrassed. She is ALWAYS prepared now, although I haven’t done that since.

Cupcake, we think you’re just a private kitty and didn’t want to do your business out in the open where the whole world could see. 😉

Educating folks about good cat practice is the best thing! Cupcake is too cute, also.

Maybe next time Cupcake will meet the neighbor kitty on a leash. Eons ago TW tried to leash train Faith but she wouldn’t walk.

I’d take my cats out on a harness, and none of them wanted to pee outside. Cupcake is an adventurous kitten.

Your adventure is befitting a super hero, Cupcake. You definitely should start a super hero series starring you! A couple years ago Bear acted like he needed the litter box – but I was letting it soak and disinfect – so I let him out in our protected front yard to do his business. Did he? Nope. And it’s not like he’d never done it before because he was homeless for the first 8 months of his life. I guess after they get used to a litter box – they think going outside is the same as going outside the litter box inside.

Wonderful adventure ! Don’t worry, Cupcake, it took almost two years to Pixie to figure out that the garden could be a litter box, and she did not totally figure it out yet : she only pees, and only if the temperature is mild… Purrs

Cupcake, you’re sort of too cute to handle. I mean, just look at your face! Our hearts are melting. Also, Poop Island had us MOLing. We’d now like to name our back yard Poop Pasture, in honor of pup Astrid’s contributions.

well of course, that’s what the powder room is for, right? We are soooo jealous of your ability to climb a REAL tree, not just the indoor cat tree!

So glad the training is going well. This reminds of Odin on his first tree climbing 🙂
