Just Say No to Lilies

The head peep’s favorite flower has always been the stargazer lily. She loves how they look and especially how they smell.

But we can’t even have them in the house. Do you know why?

If you said it’s because stargazer lilies are poisonous to cats, you’re right. She knows that if there are flowers in the house, we absolutely must have the taste. It doesn’t matter how where she puts them. Cats can jump five times their height, so it’s hard to find anywhere safe to put toxic flowers.

This is especially important this time of year, since the tradition of Easter lilies can be a dangerous one for the cats in your house.

According to the pet poison helpline, some lilies are more dangerous than others, but even the least dangerous lilies cause tissue irritation in the mouth, tongue, pharynx, and esophagus, causing drooling, foaming and pawing at the mouth, and vomiting. And those are the less dangerous lilies! The potentially fatal lilies, including the Easter lily, can cause acute kidney failure if cats eat only two or three petals, or even if they just drink the water from the vase.

Instead of listing which lilies are more dangerous than others, it stands to reason that the best thing that you an do is just avoid having lilies around cats entirely. The risk is just too high.

We are indoor kitties, so we enjoy looking at the lilies in our garden from the safety of our screened porch.

Just say no to lilies. Let this guy enjoy them instead… for your safety.

Mommy loves lilies but knows the only “safe” place to put them if she was silly enough to bring them home would be the freezer. MOL.

We won’t have those in our house either since Wally likes to nibble on plants. Guess you guys will have to look at them from afar.

Good advice. I didn’t know that about lilies. I started bringing flowers to my wife at her office years ago because they never lasted long at home. ๐Ÿ™‚

We so seldom have real flowers in the house (once a year), and never lilies of any kind! They’re very pretty though, in all their varieties!

Agreed! Many years ago, we had a $500 bouquet of lilies – $10 for the gifted lilies and $490 for the vet bills because Rocky decided to sniff them ten minutes after they arrived and the vet wanted to make sure he didn’t ingest a toxic amount. They’re MomFOD’s favorite, too. Sadly, it seems like most lovely flowers are toxic to cats. ๐Ÿ™

Mom has found the only place safe for real live flowers in our house is in the shower behind the glass walls. She has not been fond of putting flowers in the shower so she discourages Daddy from giving her cut flowers. Now all flowers we have go outside in the yard where we can safely look at them from behind the windows and doors.

Yup, the peep loves her lilies but real lilies only ever come in the house if they’re gonna be put in the livin’ room that can be closed off. It’s not just the eatin’ of the petals or leaves. One must be extremely careful of the pollen, too. The pollen gets on everythin’ and if it gets on a kitty and that kitty licks it off… See? Best to keep the lilies away from the kitties, for sure.

This is important information for sure! So many bring flowers into their homes without thinking about whether or not they are toxic to their pets – Mom was one of them! Until she realized that Delilah was eating any flowers that she brought home, so she did some research. Great post.

Beautiful but deadly and it’s all the spring bulb flowers. Look out for the pollen. I grow stargazers and other asiatic lilies but thankfully our cats like nothing in the garden except grass and catnip.

Mom and Dad used to like floral arrangement with them in it…but once the pollen from the center ruined one of Mom’s fave blouses…that yellow does not COME OUT…she explicitly asked Dad to NEVER bring them home again….and then she found out how toxic they are to cats…done deal…don’t come in our home any more.

Peeps used to have lilies in the yard. Do you think the outside kitties eat them and die?

Mojoheadz is the go-to market place showcasing the innovation and evolution of the genre. Seeing as the label was founded in 2019, the catalogue stretches back to include seminal tracks like Endego’s ‘Sorry’, but in more recent years its contemporary output has guided dance music with releases by psytrance and happy hardcore. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Dkd48upc1czszkQelMLxw
