The Arrival of Not-Summer

Ashton: One of the things that humans who live in Florida often say is, “I miss the seasons!”

That’s silly. We have seasons. Summer, and not summer. The best part of not summer is that’s when the air conditioner turns off and the windows open, including the door to our little screened porch. It’s our own little taste of The Wild.

The Wild has a great smell, and it lets me feel the wind in my whiskers.

Ashton_on_the_porch_03_sm

I can watch the birds flying past, and… hey, what’s that?

Ashton_on_the_porch_00_sm

 I can’t quite reach it.

Pierre: What’s going on out there, Ashton?

Ashton: Nothing. I was just enjoying The Wild.

Ashton_Pierre_on_porch_02_sm

Ashton: And check this thing out. I can’t quite reach it, but what do you think it is?

Pierre: I think if you pull that, you’ll end up outside. You know, the place where there’s no canned food at dinnertime.

Ashton_Pierre_on_porch_03_sm

Ashton: No canned food?! Maybe I’ll just leave it alone after all.

We have seasons too out here in southern California! They are Warm, Hot, REALLY Hot, Hot and Brown, and Surprisingly Cold At Night. So we actually have FIVE seasons to the rest of the country’s four.

Over in Sweden we have all the “normal” seasons : Spring , Summer , Autimn and Winter 🙂

Glad you didn´t reach the door handle so you got out in the wild outdoors !

    XOXO

The Mom says she misses the seasons, too. Out here in CO, we have winter and summer – there seems to be no fall or spring!

Ashton, we think you should leave that thing alone. No canned food would be very very sad!

We have the seasons and now it’s gotten really cool here and fall has definitely arrived. It’s best to stay inside Ashton, no matter what season it is.

Wise choice, Ashton. It’s a scary world behind those doors!

The 4 seasons here in Vermont are the best!

We don’t like it when the seasons get more confused than us!

We’re enjoying the smell of fall! It smells different. Mom always lets us have access to the back screened in porch all year long, even when it’s super hot or cold (cold for us) she will let us out back. Mr Jinx spends nearly all day on the sofa. He has to go back to the Vet this Friday.

That is a nice screened porch to see and smell the wild. It is cold and windy here.

What a great screened porch. I like your description of your seasons – kind of the same here – although, Summer is right too!

“not summer” sounds nicer than “almost winter” which is what seems to be going on here. we went from the hots to “turn on the heat mom”. ugh…. and yep – we suggest staying inside 🙂

I can open those things so my humans have to keep all the doors locked including interior ones where they do not want me!

I thought you were going after the great escape! “The place where there’s no canned food at dinnertime” is a good way to talk about outside.

I was wondering about that magic handle! My mom really likes that style but she knows us too well.

We love this time of year too. Mom and Dad opened the windows the other day, and we got to sit on the window sills with just a screen between us and The Wild. It was pawesome!

What you mean no canned food? The outside doesn’t know canned food?

I’m glad you’re enjoying the outdoors safely. And I think it was a very good idea to leave the door closed. You never know what’s outside the gate, but you do know there’s no canned food.

Aah, those wonderful memories of “not-summer”, a grand time of year! And wonderful memories, too … of the kitties up against screens and doors trying to catch the “you know whats!”.
    Great photos, love them all.
