Wand Toy 101

A recent post by Summer reminded us that there was a Birbug hiding in the closet, and that we had been promised we would get to play with it if we were good kitties. Of course, we’re always good kitties, so we don’t know why it took so ridiculously long to get to try it. After destroying his last wand toy, Pierre asked if he could use it to teach Wand Toy 101.

Pierre: Hello, everykitty! Today, I’m demonstrating basic wand toy technique. Basic technique only requires you to be on the ground. As a matter of fact, you can lay right down on the ground, if you want. When the wand toy goes past, grab it!

Pierre swats at wand toyThe key is to always keep your eye on the toy. It’s sneaky, and if you don’t keep watching it, the toy might thump you on the back of the head. Sure, your human may say they’re sorry after you get thumped on the back of your head with the wand toy, but it’s pretty embarrassing. Better not to let that thing out of your sight.

Pierre keeps an eye on the wand toy at all timesOnce you get hold of the wand toy, grab with both paws. If you don’t, it’s going to get away. Then bite! I like to chew and maybe drool a little… you know, to show it’s mine. But the important part is that you show that wand toy that you’re in charge now.

Pierre bites wand toyThat’s wand toy 101. I hope you can come back tomorrow for some more advanced moves!

Lita loves Neko Flies, but we don’t have a Birbug yet. It looks like a ton of fun! And you’ve got some great moves, Pierre.

I love the second picture!! My cats don’t destroy wand toys, I’m pretty surprised myself because they do destroy almost anything else. But cords and headphones are more interesting I assume.

Great tips. I love a game where I don’t have to move much. TW is a champ at hitting me with toys and apologizing for it.
