Thank you all for your warm welcome to Beau yesterday! There has been more than a little bit of hissing and growling, but there has also been an encouraging amount of peace already, considering Beau arrived so recently. In this photo, Ashton naps on the bottom rung of the cat tree, about two feet from Beau, who just finished bathing.
In general, Pierre hisses at Beau, and Beau growls at everybody else. He seems to be most accepting of Newton, who is the most persistently curious and least likely to hiss or act aggressive.
Beau loves to snuggle and burrow, which is really cute at bedtime. The biggest problem right now is that he came from a free-feeding environment and isn’t getting the idea that he needs to eat at meals very quickly, but we know he can figure it out.
Layla from Cat Wisdom 101 asked about how we managed introductions. We actually did it the totally non-approved way. Beau came out of his carrier and met a curious Newton, then Pierre came in to give his two cents, then Ashton wandered in later. We are prepared to separate him and do more gradual introductions if necessary, but he is an extremely social cat and cries if separated from humans by a door. So it wouldn’t be preferable to do that, if we don’t have to.
We’ll keep you posted about Beau’s progress as he settles into the household. We have lots of other posts in the queue already, since we are preparing for the head peep to be away in November, so if you see less of him than you expect, it isn’t because the peeps love him any less. It’s just because they have a lot more photos of the rest of us right now!
That’s amazing that Ashton is chilling out on her tree with Beau just 2 feet from her! Good to know things are going well between Beau and Newton. We hope Pierre comes around soon!

Sounds like Beau is just plain a nice cat and unbothered by the other cats so they are accepting him. I think you did fine just letting them get to know each other. Take care.
Beau seems to be managing fine the way you are doing it. Once everyone scent is mingled things will hopefully the hissing and spitting will cease.

Beau looks quite calm sitting against the window and Ashton doesn’t seem bothered by him. They’ll all be great friends before long.

It sounds like Beau is going to fit right in. We did our introductions your way too, until we had Julie. Now we have to do it gradually. Well, in the case of MMM, we’ve never gotten past the behind the door stage, but gradual worked with Oui Oui.
Before Julie, we would try to do gradual, but the kitties fussed at the doors separating them so much, the mom just opened the door, and it always worked out fine. Until Julie . . .

A belated welcome to Beau! We hope evrything settles down soon.
Our humans are very bad about introductions. They are very good about trying, but the intruder or one of us always discovers that something different is a paw. Once the secret is revealed, it’s all over but the hissing. The one thing they will do is keep the newbies in the kitchen at night for at least the first couple of months so the rest of us won’t be snuck up on and disturbed while we’re sleeping.
