Pierre: It’s almost time!
Newton: Time for what? Dinner? Can I order the hungry-cat portion?
Pierre: Time for Hanukkah!
Newton: Hey, we did that last year, didn’t we?
Pierre: We tried. but even at your age, it’s clear that anything with candles isn’t safe around you, Newton.
Newton: Fine, blame me. You already blame me for everything that happens to the tree. And aren’t we supposed to have either menorah or a tree? Both seems kind of like cheating.
Pierre: It’s not cheating. We’re multicultural cats. The head peep grew up lightning a menorah every Hanukkah, but we also have a tree because they’re beautiful.
Newton: And they’re fun to climb.
Pierre: *sighs* That too, Newton. Which gets back to why we can’t light the menorah. I hope that Hanukkah Harry finds us anyhow.
Newton: If I promise to sit way up here, do you think she’ll light the menorah so that we don’t miss out on gifts? I promise not to get excited by the bright little flickering lights and pounce!ย See, I’m waiting.
Pierre: I’m pretty sure that the holiday is about togetherness and love as much as it is about gifts, Newt, but suit yourself. That means more latkes for Ashton and me!
Newton: Latkes? Wait up!
What we say here is often in good fun, of course, but we really can’t have an open flame around. Newton really will knock it over or catch his fur on fire. Always be careful with open flames around cats. Also, latkes are tasty, but are often made with onions. Check the recipe before sharing a taste with kitties. Have a safe and joyous Hanukkah, however you celebrate!
Katnip Lounge says
Mommy says SHE’S coming over for latkes! No candles here, either. OR a tree…
*pout*
Summer says
You are just saying that about latkes so you can keep them all to yourself, and you do not have to share with the kitties! That is how humans are, I’ve noticed. Pull out that old “onion” card! MOL.
Katie Isabella says
I’ll be there for latkes too! We don’t have candles either except the flawless kind. And mommy said she’ll finally trust me enough to have a tree up for a day or so. xoxoxox

I’m pretty sure they make flameless ones these days.. ๐
Anna Borsey says
Yes, they do. Actually, in the USA, it has been possible to buy electric chanukiahs, or menorahs, for quite a number of years, I gather.

Kitties Blue says
We have a menorah and trees. Daddy is Jewish and mommy Catholic so we celebrate Winter Holiday…the best of both worlds. We have had some candle disasters involving cats, but most of them have involved our klutzy mom. No flames at our house anymore either. Excellent advice for all kitty and woofie households. Those wagging tells can be dangerous! Ho, ho, ho, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
Anna Borsey says
Where did you obtain that most stylish brass chanukiah menorah? I take it this is a vintage one – made in Israel, perhaps?
Wainberg in Jerusalem designed a rather similar one in the 1950s (according to my research) but your one is much more elegant. His is made from brass pipes and looks somewhat clunky.
I have spent quite a lot of time trying to locate a really handsome chanukiah that I can afford … Sigh
By the way, I suppose you could have a Chanukkah tree. A sort of Jewish Tree of Life, maybe? I know it is supposedly a pagan custom to bring a tree into one’s home for the Midwinter festival of Lights, but customs evolve as the centuries roll by. I don’t imagine Jews in the Middle Ages fried and ate donuts at Chanukkah … or did they?
