You hear all the time that cats don’t like the water. It would be more accurate to say that most cats don’t like the water. Cupcake thinks the water is fascinating.
As soon as anyone turns on the water in the bathroom sink, she stops whatever she is doing to run into the bathroom. She will even stop eating in the middle of eating a meal if she hears the water running.
This happens so often that the humans in the house have to be careful when going about normal sink-related activities. Like any cat, Cupcake moves quickly, and she can show up when you aren’t expecting her. So far, no one has spit a mouthful of toothpaste on her, but there have been some near misses.
She seems totally unconcerned that she gets her ears and head wet while she is hunting the stream of water. Water splashes off of her head as she dives into the sink after her elusive prey, and she continues swatting at the droplets.
Wouldn’t you like to know what she’s thinking? Sometimes it seems she thinks she needs to stop the water from going down the drain. You can see in the photo below she is grabbing the pop-up sink stopper. We came home the other day to find she had pulled it all the way out while the sink was dry and we were away.
Other times it seems she is just interested in grabbing the water as it splashes down into the basin of the sink. She prefers a steady stream of water that creates a ripple of water against the bottom of the sink basin. That seems to be the most fun to put her paws in.
For now, this is her favorite entertainment in the house, and she follows the humans into the bathroom, watching to see if they will turn on the water for her. She watches so intently we are a little worried that she is trying to figure out how to turn the sink faucet knobs!
You can see Cupcake in action below. If the video doesn’t display in your browser, you can view it directly on YouTube.
As you can see, Cupcake is happy to do her own cleanup after playing in the sink. Her preferred level of tidying up didn’t keep her from making wet footprints all over the house, so we try to dry her off after sink time is over.
She acts alarmed if you try to enfold her in one of those big bath sheets, so she has her own, smaller towel hanging in the bathroom. It is always ready so she can have her paws and head dried off before she romps off to make trouble elsewhere in the house.
Do you know any cats who like to play in the water?
Summer says
Cupcake, you are nutty! Binga drinks from the bathroom sink sometimes, but she tries not to get any water on her head.
Fur Everywhere says
Carmine doesn’t play in the sink, but he doesn’t mind getting wet (unless he has to have a full bath!). As a kitten, he used to sit between my shower liner and curtain when I had a shower.
I actually had a friend in graduate school whose cat would sit in the shower with her when she showered!
Kristine says
Felix cat has to check out the shower after it is used. He likes to watch any drops that fall and check out the drain…
The Island Cats says
Oh Cupcake! What a silly girl you are. When I was much younger, I loved playing in the sink and with water. But I rarely got wet. ~Wally
Kitties Blue says
Lily was always a water cat, but as she has gotten older, about all she does is paw through the water fountain, and then she licks the water off her paws. Our Madison used to drink from the sink, and he always put his head under the running water and drank it after it ran down the side of his face. Silly. Cupcake certainly has taken her water fetish to a whole new level. Bet she’ll learn to turn the faucet on! that is hilarious!! mom isn’t sure if she should be amused or appalled…we may have given you a defective kitten. MOL you need to get some of those automatic fish and put them in the bathtub – her head would explode
The Menagerie Mom says
Look at you having all that fun, Cupcake! None of the kitties around here are much into water. Evan does like to dig at his water bowls before getting a drink, but that’s about it. My parents, though, they have a number of water-loving kitties. They like to remove the sink stopper just like you, Cupcake! In fact, just the other day I went to my parents’ house and found one of their sink stoppers in the living room. Have fun, Cupcake (we know you will)!
William's Kith & Kin says
Cupcake, you are so silly! We get the wet feet thing but getting your head wet, too?
Melissa & Mudpie says
You are such a crazy kid, Cupcake! (But totally adorable.) Glad you haven’t gotten any toothpaste on the head yet…YUCK!
Karen Blank says
I have a Cornish Rex and when the granddaughter would take a bath Lizzy would sit on the side of the tub and than just jump in and walk around, she doesn’t mind water dripping on her head.
Lola The Rescued Cat says
This is so funny! Lexy loves drinking from the sink, but doesn’t like getting wet. I never go near the thing.

Cupcake is TRULY character! How hilarious! My Angel Bobo liked water but not to this extent!! lol
Eastside Cats says
Cupcake, you are adorable! When Angel and Chuck were young, they liked to play in the water, but now they aren’t interested. Cute video!
Cathy Keisha says
HAH! I’m guilty and so was Faith E. Gurl. I won’t drink water but I used to try to drink the water TW spit out after she brushed her teeth. We also have tub games we play. Faith used to only drink fro the sink. She’d jump up 50 times a day and wait for someone to turn the water on.
Ellen Pilch says
That is too cute, I love the video. Purrseidon has a blog, she loves to go to the beach in the water, but that is the only other one I know of.

Piper LOVES the water too. Every morning she waits on the edge of the tub while I shower, then tries to jump in with me. Every time I run water in the kitchen sink I have to look for her, or she’ll come racing in and climb into the sink. However, she’s always careful not to get her head fully under the stream – Cupcake, you are fearless! 🙂
emma and buster says
We don’t like water! Mom is jealous that you do.
Connie - Tails from the Foster Kittens says
the bottle babies that ended up getting a lot of baths generally love water. My sister adopted one from me and she reported that the kitty would often jump into the shower with her

Now THAT is adorable. Bear has a complicated relationship with water … as long as he is CHOOSING to get wet, he’s fine (he escapes outside when it’s raining to sit in the pouring rain and “make” me come and get him … he plays in his water bowl … he had an obsession with the toilet when he was younger …). But against his will? You’ll pay.

You’re in the same boat we are, and neither of us better ever buy one of those touch faucets! *Looks meaningfully at Maxwell*
