We are all adopted rescue cats. Ashton was found on the road, and both Pierre and Newton came from local rescue organization that kept them in foster homes until they were adopted. They were all rescued, but none of them came from actual shelters. The Humane Society of the United States says that only 30% of pets in US households come from rescue facilities.
3.4 million shelter pets lose their lives in the shelter system every year while waiting for forever homes. To try to make that number smaller, today is Remember Me Thursday, for shelter pet adoption awareness.

Animal lovers and organizations across the globe unite on the fourth Thursday of September to light a candle in remembrance of the millions of orphan pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving home and to shine a light on the millions of orphan pets still waiting for their forever homes.
You can check to see if your local shelter or rescue organization is participating, and join them in lighting candles for adoption awareness. None of our local shelters are involved, so we are going to light a virtual candle instead.

I was a shelter kitty, but I was one of the lucky ones. We purr today for all the animals in shelters everywhere…’specially those that weren’t as lucky as me.

We were rescue cats and were lucky to be taken in by the RSPCA. Our Mum saw us there and brought us to our furever home.

Mommy is lighting a virtual candle in her heart. We do not have candles in the house as Mom and a couple of us have gotten to close to them in the past. She’s had some clothing accidents, and we have had some fur accidents. She doesn’t know about any of our shelters or rescues doing this but is going to check it out. Lighting a virtual candle here too…
I was just thinking none of the fab five have ever been in a shelter either. Gracie came the closest nearly being put into prison at the ACA. She was left outside on the doorstep which we rescued her from. Boo,Jinx and Ping were dropped on our *doorstep* and Abby was given up by her family to us through a rescue group but she was in their hands for about an hour.
It is so sad that so many lives are snuffed out because of overpopulation and we wish more people who spay/neuter. FCNMHP in our area has made such an impact on the overpopulation, that they have virtually NO euthanasia in their shelter.It really works! We’re participating in the next mega Adoptathon the first week of October where normally over 1000 animals find forever homes.

We’re lighting a virtual candle too, especially for kitties like Maxwell and Ashton who – because they are differently-abled – are considered less adoptable. May today’s event raise awareness for shelter animals the world over.
We will remember them all each and every day and we will keep fighting for them. We remember shelter life and being oh so lucky.

This is such an impawtant event…hope it goes on for decades. Mom and Dad lit many candles…we are believers in this house that the USA should be a no kill nation…just sayin’…
Our mom has had 12 cats. Some were rescues, some strays, some ferals. All were unloved and unwanted, and all have been wonderful companions. Its heartbreaking to know so many have lost their life every year; each and every one could have been a wonderful companion too.
Raz was one of the lucky ones who found a forever home. We purr and pray for a day when all the kitties and woofies have loving forever homes.

I was a shelter kitty. In fact, I was in 2 shelters. I lit a candle today for the little kitty the peeps found dumped on 495. They don’t know what happened to it but they did leave food and call 2 rescue people to alert them.
