Lilies are Toxic to Cats

This time of year, many people have lilies in their homes as they celebrate the Easter season. It’s not well-known that lilies are toxic to cats. As little as two leaves from a single flower have resulted in death. If your cat does eat or chew any part of a lily, don’t wait to see if symptoms develop. The only way to help cats who have ingested the toxins in the plant is early medical attention, so see your vet immediately.

To be safe, avoid having lilies anywhere a cat can access… and don’t forget that cats are great athletes and can jump as much as five times their height. A high shelf may not be as safe as you think! It’s safer not to allow lilies in your home with cats.

My human is amazed there are still people out there that don’t know this! She loves lilies but will NEVER go near them – she doesn’t even want to risk getting any pollen on her clothes and bringing it home to us kitties.

Always a good reminder. Perhaps a small investment in really nice silk lilies (thinking Michaels Crafts) would be worthwhile for those who really want lilies for Easter. Or are there chocolate lilies? LOL.

Thanks for stopping by re: Derry’s dental today. Trish is right, he probably will do better than I will. Ha.

Great reminder! Thankfully I have a black thumb so there are never any flowers or plants of any kind in our house 🙂

Mum never has flowers in the house as we tend to knock vases over while sniffing them.

We always have to watch out for them. If they can get into something, they will.

I want to thank you for your kind words about Tungsten’s death. She was very special to me and always will be.

love your infographic!! We blogged about lilies about a week or so ago (an old post we did when a young man contacted us because his cat died from having eaten lilies).
I wish more people knew that they (and other flowers) are deadly to cats.
We can never repeat this enough and thank you for doing so!

Dunno why house cats aren’t smarter. We had lillies in the old garden and don’t think the outdoor kitties touched them. Great infographic.

There are no lilies in our house. Mom would dead them anyway so we’ll just stay far away from them.

if you are going to have them in the house, cut off the stamen (where all the pollen is) because that stuff gets everywhere..
