What happens when one of the coffee shop regulars says “Hey, watch my dog while I go inside” but doesn’t wait for you to say “OK”?
Cupcake watched, all right. She and Harley actually sniffed noses a few seconds before the photo below. I was too busy being ready to intervene in case things didn’t go well to get a photo of the moment they touched noses, but it was totally nonthreatening on either side.
As you can tell, Cupcake wasn’t really disturbed by having such a large dog near her. It’s funny, she has more issues with strange cats than strange dogs! Then again, has grown up encountering strange dogs here at the coffee shop patio, while the strange cats were almost always outside her window, threatening her personal territory.
Harley is just the kind of dog to reassure Cupcake. She isn’t very confident, while Cupcake is in her element hanging out here on the patio.
In fact, recently-adopted Harley was returned to the rescue organization three times before her most recent adoption. She is very pleasant but doesn’t engage much with humans. Maybe she is just daydreaming.
Once Harley had a look and sniff at Cupcake, she lay down. Cupcake made sure to watch her new friend a little while longer, but soon Harley and her human were gone to run their weekend errands.
It’s great to see Cupcake making friends like Harley. The more friends, the merrier, especially when they teach her that other species are friendly.

I prefer dogs to cats myself, which is funny considering I come from a cat show background! But 90% of the therapy dogs I’ve worked with are super chill and awesome, so I guess it makes sense.
Good job Cupcake….
We don’t think we would have been so accepting. Glad Cupcake wasn’t bothered…and actually made a friend!
Cupcake, you could use a tough-cat nickname while out and about, to intimidate any possible interlopers…human or four-footed. Dead-eye, Killer, or Snarles! You are just too cute! 😉
Well done Cupcake on being so laid back with Harley.
Cupcake, you are so sweet to make friends with dogs that unsure of themselves !
Cupcake what a trooper you are! Way to go.
Harley looks like such a sweetheart! I’m so happy to see Cupcake make new friends, no matter the species 🙂
Harley looks cute and non threatening, Cupcake looks sure of herself. I’m sure he wouldn’t have dared try anything. Plush had first dog encounter this weekend but nothing so involved – I carried him and the dog walked by and looked up. Cute doodle type thing. Good owner, got its attention right back. Plush hardly noticed.
I would have swatted the dog but I woulda killed another cat.
Cupcake, you are very brave and confident. You definitely know by now that doggies are not the enemy unless they have not been exposed to kitties before and are afraid of us.. It goes the same way with other cats who have not been exposed to other cats, too! It all comes down to what they know about each other.
I apawed your bravery in all instances- dogs or unknown cats too!
Luvz, Patzy
Cupcake, you make friends with all kinds of species … and you don’t seem to get flustered a bit.
