It seems like every cat shelter or rescue has at least one, and usually several of them: black cats that everyone agrees are nice, but no one wants to adopt. On Black Cat Appreciation Day, rescue organizations take special effort to showcase these cats to help them find homes.
Black cat adoption is important today and all year around since 33% of the cats entering the shelter system are black. That means that 1/3 of all adoptions need to be black cats in order to get them into homes. That’s hard when many people already hope to adopt a white cat or a tabby cat or a calico or some other color.
So if you’re considering adopting a cat, there are lots of reasons black cats are awesome. They’re little house ninjas, and they never go out of style, like that little black dress.
But most of all, there are so many of them in shelters that there’s one whose personality is the perfect match for yours waiting for you right now.
Even though we don’t have any black cats living with us today, for many years we had three: Cyrano, Louie, and Talia, whose photos are in this blog post.

We have several black cats at CCS who have been around for years, and I have NO idea why they have not found their forever homes. There are two sweet senior girls I’d love to take home if I could. It makes me sad that they seem to be overlooked.

Mum had a black cat before she chose us (he didn’t even have 1 white fur) – he came with a tabby lady cat called Emma from the Cats Protection League. Sadly he died at 16 years of age as he had cancer. Emma lived to be 21 years old.

Well, you know how we feel about black cats here! My poor bro Elliott used to be one of those overlooked kids until my mom finally met him. If we could, I know we’d get another, although I am totally for dying Caroline black. Maybe it would mellow her out!
Savannah's Paw Tracks says
We specifically searched for a black cat as our second adoption and secondary we searched for one with a special personality that Savannah might not be fearful of. The Kid Sage is our special black cat. Great post

When I went to adopt my first cat, I wanted a black cat and ended up adopting Kelly and his tabby littermate Casey (it was St. Patrick’s Day, 1975). Since then I have had Flash, her younger sister Dumpling (now 16 years old), and Lugosi (4 years old, rescued during Hurricane Irene). All except Kelly and Casey were feral rescues, as are my other three current cats. Black cats rock, just like all cats! After Kelly and Casey, I never set out to rescue anyone, but just happened upon them and took them in. The right cat (or dog) will find you.

It’s just luck of the draw that there are not any black kitties here, although Sister Precious is mostly black. We think black kitties are very special and one of our best ferals is black and his name is Hank.

Pop has always wanted a black cat. We were reading the other day that a higher percentage of black cats are adopted than gray cats but black cats do rock. Source: http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/is-it-a-myth-that-black-shelter-pets-are-less-likely-to-be-adopted

We think black cats are beautiful! Mom Paula say a beautiful black cat at the shelter right before Sweet Praline went to the bridge. She said she almost brought it home, but Sweet Praline needed all of her attention at the time.
