Ashton’s First Gotcha-Versary

July 8 is the first anniversary of Ashton’s gotcha day. It’s hard to believe that it has been a year since Ashton arrived!

Ashton was a rescue in the literal sense, found in a highway median, unable to use her hindquarters to walk, something that probably saved her life by keeping her from running in front of the traffic that thundered past, feet away, obviously terrifying her. One side of her face was terribly swollen and her left eye was ruined. She was rescued in a rubbermaid bin, and that’s where the first picture was taken of her, on the way to the vet.

We won’t ever know what happened to make her land in the highway median, but the trip to the vet was expected to be a mercy euthanasia. The vet had other ideas. After an X-ray, the vet suggested, “Why don’t you take her home for a couple days and see how she does?”

The other cats were interested in what was wrapped in a blanket with a hot water bottle. They weren’t all pleased when they realized what had arrived.

The new kitten got her very own cage in the sunroom, and soon recovered the ability to stand and walk.

Ashton, Day 1

She underwent a proper inspection by Inspector N.

After a few days, she started to be allowed out on supervised visits. She had to wait a while to be strong enough for eye surgery, but in the meantime, she wanted to play with the big boys!

After she had recovered, she had surgery to remove the remains of her ruined eye and gained the trademark Ashton wink.

She recovered more, and she grew…

and grew…

and grew!

A year later, she’s a big girl, healthy and happy. She rules the house from her throne.

Happy gotcha day, Ashton!

We know she had a terrible start, her story makes our mom cry and our hearts ache. Tossed from a moving vehicle, perhaps, is how she got there.

We absolutely cannot express how happy we are that she has the most amazing, wonderful, loving home with you. Bless you.

    Happy Gotcha Day, Ashton!

Happy Gotcha Day Ashton! And many, many more happy years to come. Sometimes a rough start can lead to a wonderful and loving life. One of our Mom’s favorite kitties, Lumpy, was tortured then tossed from a moving car. We know you are as beloved and happy as he was. You are a lucky girl.
