When Miss Jeanne brought Cupcake to live with us, one of the things she brought to accompany her on the trip was a stuffed monkey. Monkey has been her companion ever since.
In the past month, Cupcake’s relationship with Monkey has gotten more complicated. Instead of happily wrestling with Monkey on the chair, she takes Monkey various places around the house.
Monkey has ended up in random cardboard boxes, and he even made an appearance in the laundry basket with the dirty clothes.
Over the weekend, Monkey’s travels took another turn. Cupcake carried her friend to the water bowl and tried to drown him.
When I took Monkey away and dried him off, I discovered he had a squeaker inside. He has been here since June, and I never knew that! He’s looking a bit worse for wear these days, especially after his swim.
I gave Monkey back, and she took him right back to the water bowl in the living room.
Once he was dried off again, she carried him into the water bowl in the bedroom and dunked him again. Then, in the ultimate act of teenage cat rebellion, she grabbed soaked Monkey and jumped up onto the bed with him.
Maybe Monkey needs a vacation.
Summer says
Cupcake is trying to drown Monkey?! Wow, I don’t even know what to think!
The Daily Pip says
Some friendships are complicated. Maybe Cupcake and Monkey need to take a break.
Mark's Mews says
WE have never soaked our toy friends in the water bowl. But it IS oddly fascinating…
We want to try that…
Catatopia says
Hmmm…. laundry basket with dirty clothes and water dish. Maybe Cupcake thinks Monkey needs a good wash?
Casey54 says
I was thinking the same
Melissa & Mudpie says
Oh, that is too funny!!! Maybe she thinks he needs a bath? Mudpie’s favorite toy is a fuzzy animal print mousie and one morning I woke up to find him in her water bowl, fully submerged. I had to ring it out and hang it outside!!!
LanceR says
I thought that at first, too, but on second thought, wouldn’t she just wash him with her tongue?
The Island Cats says
We wonder why Cupcake wants to drown Monkey? Does he smell and she think he needs a bath? Zoey has been known to drown mousies.
Random Felines says
Oh no…poor Monkey. What the heck Cupcake??
The Florida Furkids says
MOL Noelle is doing the exact same thing with her favorite mousie. He’s been in the food bowl and was rescued seconds before he hit the water bowl!!

Edie Chase says
Maybe Monkey knows too much and is swimming with the fishes. He should probably go into witness (wetness?) protection for a while.
The Swiss Cats says
Zorro soaked her favorite mousie several times. Does putting Monkey in the laundry basket or in water mean that he needs to be washed, Cupcake ? Purrs
Kitties Blue says
Seems to us as if Cupcake thinks Monkey needs a bath. After all she started by dropping him in the laundry basket with the dirty clothes. By now she is probably thinking that her mom is a very slow learner. Sounds like time to send Monkey on a washing machine adventure. Keep us posted on how this all works out. Cecilia Upchurch says
OMCs Cupcake…Monkey might need a life vest. I’ve been known to drop a plastic milk ring in my water bowl but never a big stuffy.
Hugs madi and mom
Eastside Cats says
Rather Machiavellian of you, Cupcake!
We knew that sweet name and cute exterior hid a ferocious, evil huntress!
Mary McNeil says
I just saw a Q&A somewhere about why cats do this. Of course I can’t remember where – none of my cats do this on purpose – they just randomly knock stuff off and the water dishes are innocent bystanders. If I come across it again I’ll send it to you.
Julie says
I hope you can find it. I would like to read this!
Memories of Eric and Flynn says
There must be some reason for it that we humans don’t know about. Both Eric and Flynn, when they had caught a mouse and decided not to eat it would drop it into the outdoor rainwater dish. Occasionally Flynn would also bring a dead mouse indoors and put it into the drinking fountain.
Patzy and Miss Juliea says
Mommy used to have a tuxedo cat like cupcake and he had a pink bunny who talked while he carried him around the house. She would “somebunny loves you” constantly. That is until he frowned it one too many times in his water dish. Then he promptly forgot about it. He maybe was trying to make it stop talking or he no longer liked it when it did stop. Luvs, Patzy
William's Kith & Kin says
OMC! Sometimes we put a toy in the water fountain but not time after time! Poor Monkey. He looks pretty unhappy!
Ellen Pilch says
That is so cute. Cupcake is funny 🙂
Connie - Tails from the Foster Kittens says
Sounds like Cupcake believes Mr Monkey needs to sleep with the fishes
Timmy says
We have dunked the odd mousie in the water but not repeatedly
I think she is giving him a bath or a drink MOL
I wonder if she would adopt another fun friend if Monkey went on Vacation
Patzy and Miss Juliea says
What is really strange about this is cats don’t want any contaminants around their water. Meaning no dead things. In fact they don’t like their food dishes next to their water bowls at all. They are very certain about this. So I don’t think they are killing their stuffy friends but are more likely to be giving them water to nourish them.
