One of the most frequent reasons that cats are surrendered to shelters is for litterbox issues. In many cases, this happens because the human doesn’t speak cat and doesn’t understand the cause of the litterbox issue. We have compiled a list of things your cat may be saying by going outside the box.

Love this…
So true. Also another reason is the box is too clean. I made that mistake once with Alex 🙂

Great post. It is sad how many cats get brought to shelters for this problem which is usually an easy fix.

We have been dealing with this with Giulietta, and it seems to be stress related. After everything was considered and tried, it came down to having to put her on calming medication in a very low does. Unfortunately with eight cats, they can get into pee wars. We have to tell you, that you cracked all of us and Mom up with your comment about how Mauricio got all his beads. Very clever. Super information. I know we have pee-culiar litter habits at our house so Dad makes us great big custom boxes with two outlets. We need a lid and high sides for one kitty who pretends he is fighting fires. MOL

most people don’t understand the ‘not big enough’ item. I saw someone buying a kitten box for a 14lb cat.. I had to interrupt them and point them to a more appropriate box. I like to tell people they need a box big enough for the cat to lay down in and have at least half as much room left over..

Oh yeah, this is great info! Us cats can be kinda finicky when it comes to our litterboxes.

I can’t believe you only have 14 comments on this great information. I have 2 boxes: one in a high traffic area and the other in Pop’s rest room. I use them both equally except I poo more in the quiet box. Sometimes I have different litter in each if we’re trying something new. It’s all good.

This is a great graphic! I am so impressed. This is such an important message in many ways. I hope this can get out more and reach even more people.

Interrupted in the cat box by a giant dog will do it, too. At least that’s what happened to my old sis Pee Queen. She never got over it but my mom adapted to her needs.

This is a very helpful post. Creative problem solving is important, after physical issues are ruled out. Tommie would say that I’m over sharing, but as he gets older accidents happen… Doggy pee pads are useful around the boxes.
