Ashton: Did you know that today is Hairball Awareness Day? With it being springtime and cats shedding their winter coats, some of your humans may have become aware of hairballs by stepping on them recently.
So today I wanted to show you how I keep from leaving hairballs around for my humans to step on. I get groomed! It’s not that I don’t do a good job grooming myself. But this time of year, it’s easy to swallow a lot of hair while you’re going about your daily beauty routines, and that can lead to an upset stomach or even require a trip to the vet if you can’t bring the hairball back up.
The main thing about being groomed is to find a brush or other grooming tool that works for you. I like being groomed with the Furminator. It feels good, and it helps to pull out a lot of my undercoat. You can see some of the hair it has pulled out collecting next to me in this photo.
The same kind of grooming tools don’t work for every cat. Pierre has a thinner coat, and the Furminator irritates his sensitive skin. He does better with a brush that has little plastic balls at the end of each tine to protect his skin. The important thing is that your humans find a brush that works for you, and that they use it to get the extra hair off of you so you don’t have to do it yourself.
It’s also important to inspect your human’s work, because you never know whether it will be good enough or not. Good help is so hard to find.
So check it out, this is the hair that came off of me during today’s grooming session.
Do you think I can make it into a cat shape and scare Pierre and Newton with it?

Ashton we think you’d do well scaring Pierre and Newton with your cat shaped fur.
The Daily Pip says
We love our Furminator, too. Rosie’s fur is very thin and she doesn’t shed much, but our other two feline girls, Moo Shu and Elsie – shed a ton.
Random Felines says
mom says she has to work on the momma cat this weekend….that girl skipped shedding and went straight to “molting” haha

I’m collecting Jack’s furrs for someone who makes felted animals..

We think that the furminator ROCKS. We love it when Mamma Cat grooms us (very gently of course) to get rid of that loose fur and helps us NOT get hairballs.
Thanks for the post!!
Melissa & Mudpie says
Great tips, Ashton! I’ve started brushing Mudpie more over the past month and have been amazed by how much she’s shedding…and how much softer and silkier her coat is after too!

We love our Fulminator, but you’re right : humans have to find the best brush for each cat. Regular brushing is one of the best prevention against hairballs. Purrs

I really need to get a Furminator. I only hear good things!
The Island Cats says
Y’know how I celebrated Hairball Awareness Day today, Ashton? I yakked one up! Maybe I need to be furminated. ~Wally
Annie says
Yes, we are noticing much more cat fur everywhere. I’m back to combing & brushing the cats daily or every other day. The fur just doesn’t stop! I have a knock-off Furminator but still want to get a real one.
Ashton, you look lovely!
Annabelle says
Miss Ashton my Mom was shocked *SHOCKED* the other day she took the grooming tool she has to just run it over my coat and she could not believe how much fur I was shedding. You see she had used it on me in the past and got *nothing, nada zip* so her shock was complete and total. I was a bit surprised too because I put my paw down in the fur and said woman stop taking all my fur away from me!

We all get different approaches here – since my human doesn’t want to risk stripping my coat, I never get FURminated. Instead I get combed and bathed (not in that order!). Brodie gets combed and Fulminated. Binga doesn’t get much because she is not fond of being brushed! My human does what she can – fortunately, she has a short and not terribly thick coat.

We’re often too aware of hairballs around here! Great post gang!

Maybe we can get together and start a Furminater club!
I love mine…

You made a little mouse-like furball. Mom needs to furminate me a little bit. It’s not my favorite grooming tool, but as long as she’s gentle and only does it a little bit, I don’t mind too much.
Mr Puddy says
Ashton, guess what ? mom just use Furminator to make my fur shorter too because we don’t like lion cut but me not really co-operate. Me always run away … Catch me if you can…MOL
