While traveling to Atlanta to visit family recently, I took the opportunity to visit Good Mews Animal Foundation, a cage-free, no-kill cat shelter just north of Atlanta. They’re currently building a new facility that they will be moving into within a month or so, but in the meantime, they’re in a space in a strip mall. Their wonderful volunteer, Leia, spent a long time giving me the tour of the full facility and letting me meet a dizzying number of cats.
I met Roca, a sweet little Persian currently sporting a lion cut.
Then I met Sasha. This colorful girl was enjoying a spot under a great cat tree where she could watch the activity outside the window.
Ramsey’s reaction to seeing me was asking for a tummy rub. This mustachioed tuxedo gentlecat is going to be a fantastic couch potato for some lucky family.
Teddy, looking sleepy in this photo, is a sweet flame-point boy with a jaw that was once broken and healed askew. EDIT: Teddy was adopted since my visit to Good Mews!
Columbia didn’t come out of her Ess while I was in the room to visit her, and she sat in it like it was a throne. She received visitors from her Ess-throne, and is no doubt dreaming of a house full of Esses and a family to call her own.
Just look at this white kitty’s beautiful, green eyes! I didn’t catch this cat’s name in my notes, but she was mellow and enjoyed visiting with me. That pink nose looks totally kissable, doesn’t it?
Samantha is a petite, black kitty who came running to me when I went into her community room and proceeded to photobomb almost every other cat’s photo. Her fun, outgoing personality was so charming that I told her I was glad I had flown into Atlanta instead of driven so that I wouldn’t be too tempted to take her home with me.
Alice was in the same room as Samantha, but the polar opposite personality. Quiet and reserved, she kept to herself and watched until I approached her rather than approaching me for attention.
Cinderella is a talktative, outgoing bundle of energy. She was absolutely charmed with my father, and she spent ten minutes meowing to him and head butting him for attention. She’s the kind of cat I can imagine would enjoy a rousing game with a wand toy.
Sweet Rick was one of the first cats to want to know what we were doing when we entered his room. He looks a little bit different because he has eyelid agenesis, a condition where his eyelids didn’t form properly. Good Mews provided multiple surgeries to help him be comfortable and able to see properly.
Mocha is full of tortietude. Just look at that face, ready to take charge as only a tortie can! She was sweet and personable with strangers, and she loved posing for the camera.
Of all the cats I met at Good Mews, Sedona was the one who charmed me the most. One of three diabetic cats living in the special needs room, she has the softest fur you’ve ever felt, and she has the most heart-melting gaze. I could have spent hours cuddling Sedona, and it seemed like she was ready to let me, too.
Louis must be the class clown. This is what he did as soon as I got close enough to take notice of him. How can you ignore a kitty giving you the upside down eyes like these?
This kitty, whose name I think was Zoe, was sleeping soundly on the reception desk. I don’t think she was getting a lot of paperwork done, but she was keeping the volunteers working at the desk company.
These two cats, Clyde and a black kitty whose name I didn’t get, were also sleeping on the reception desk. The volunteers told me that it was kind of amazing to see them all cuddled up like that because the two of them didn’t even get along with each other when they were awake.
This lovely princess is aptly named Princess. She was super-friendly and also very playful. This green-eyed look came when I interrupted her playing with her ball in a track to pose for a photo.
Mona is a sweet kitty, and a big girl. She reminded me a bit of what Ashton would look like if she was allowed to eat everything she wanted to, so my heart went out to her. She’s a little timid, but she warmed up to me after a few minutes, and she is going to make a sweet companion for someone who wants to help her regain her ladylike kitty figure.
There were lots and lots more cats at Good Mews that I didn’t photograph because I was so busy visiting, petting cats, and talking to the friendly volunteers. If you’re in the Atlanta area and looking for a new feline family member, they’re a great group to help you find someone who will be a good fit for you.
A big thank you to everyone who was on site the Sunday before last and spent so much time with me, telling me about the adoptable cats and about their own cats, too. Any misspellings or misidentifications of cats are purely my own and not theirs. They went above and beyond to make me feel at home during my visit, and I can’t wait to see their new shelter facility on a future visit to Atlanta!
