Newton: It’s Earth Day! And just because I’m a cat doesn’t mean I can’t can’t participate in the billion acts of green movement.
Ashton: But Newton, you aren’t green. You’re orange.
Newton: *sigh* Do you see what I live with?
Ashton: I heard that!
Newton: Green means something is good for the environment.
Ashton: That sounds like a good idea. What can we cats do that is good for the environment?
Newton: We can recycle.
Ashton: Is recycling like when Pierre gets sick to his stomach and then afterwards you–
Newton: We agreed not to talk about that, remember?
Newton: Here, let me show you. This is a way that we can recycle. The cans from our food go into the recycling bin instead of the trash.
Newton: Our cat food cans are made of aluminum, which is recyclable. If we throw away our food cans, they are in the landfill forever, but aluminum is a material that can be recycled over and over again. A can can be turned into a new can and be back on the store shelf again within 60 days.
Ashton: That’s fast!
Newton: But surveys have shown that only a little more than half of pet owners recycle their cat food cans. Not only is recycling good for the environment but in some cities, programs like Paws to Recycle use money from donated recyclable items to help rescued animals in need. If your cat food cans can help other cats, why wouldn’t you recycle them?
Ashton: I like this Earth Day thing. But you’re still orange, not green.
Newton: *sigh*
Happy Earth Day, everybody!

Happy Earth Day buddies ! Recycling is very usual here in Switzerland, and there are collecting spot everywhere for paper, glass, iron, aluminum, plastic for beverage (PET), plant waste, oil, piles, bulbs…. The cumbersome objects are so regularly got back. You have to pay for refuse bags for not recyclable waste that will be burned, what is rather incentive (1 single bag for 35 L of waste = 2 CHF = 2,3$ ). Purrs

Such smart kitties! (Living with a smart hu-mom!) Kermit used to sing “it’s not easy being green”, but truthfully, IT IS!
Good job!

We recycle our stinky goodness cans too. Unfortunately, our woofie will try to recycle a lot of other stuff too if Mom doesn’t watch him 🙁

Mommy collects the recyclables (usually plastic, paper and glass) then sends them to a nearby donation box for the charity to sell and raise funds. Daddy thinks she’s a little nutty for doing that since our garbage collectors will sift through the garbage they collect to look for these things (try not to imagine this).
Laila and Minchie says
Happy Earth Day! Like you, we also recycle our food cans.
Susan Farr says
We are given 3 bins by our council – one for garden waste, one for household waste and one for paper, glass and cans – they collect household waste one week and the garden waste with the paper, glass and cans bin the other week. It’s so much better that when everything was collected altogether.

That’s the food Rocky eats! You’re right; we used to recycle them all, but when we moved, MOmFOD lost her covered trash can and now we all go in the cans and throw them on the floor and stuff. MomFOD promises to find a solution and continue recycling!

Recycling our food cans is a great idea! We really need to start doing that…. thanks for the reminder, Asthon and Newton!

Happy Earth Day! We’re one of those families who recycle our pet food cans. We recycle and reuse everything we have. TW always brings cloth bags to the supermarket. And, um, you’re still orange.

Recycling is compulsory for us. We get clear biodegradable plastic bags for paper and cardboard and blue transparent plastic bags for cans and plastic which is collected every other week. Our household waste goes in a black bin bag and is collected on the other weeks. If the wrong things are put in the recycling bags they get left with a big sticker to say so. We have never had one of those though. Mum uses the “Bags for Life” for her shopping which are made from recycled plastic. When they wear out you hand them in at the checkout to be recycled again and get given new ones.
